• Steam Deck Doesn’t Get a Performance Boost When Docked

Docking the Steam Deck will not increase its performance, according to Valve designer Greg Coomer.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Coomer responded to questions asked about whether Valve had considered implementing a higher power mode that could be utilized when the handheld was docked. He said, "Yes, but we didn't choose to make it a really high priority design target… we felt that it was actually better all things considered to not modify based on docked status or mobile status."

Coomer says that Valve's choice not to implement higher performance features for the docked consoles came as a matter of prioritization. Valve, he explains, has identified that the console's "highest use case" will be to run mobile and so "chose a threshold where the machine will run well, and with a good frame rate with AAA games in that scenario." said Coomer. "We didn't really feel like we should target also going after the dock scenario at higher resolutions. We wanted a simpler design target and to prioritize that." Coomer explains.

Although opting not to improve the console's performance when docked, the Steam Deck will be compatible with higher resolution monitors. However, players hoping to connect their console up to their high-resolution monitors may not find it as simple as plugging the console in and expecting flawless gameplay.

Recently, Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained that its '30 FPS target' for games running on the console will be "the floor of what we consider playable in our performance testing". Despite his comments indicating that many games would run on the console at a higher framerate than 30 fps, this is applicable to the console performing at its native 800p resolution and doesn't speak for connecting the console to a higher resolution screen. Scaling that resolution up on a monitor could mean that the console's performance suffers as a result of the capabilities of its four-core AMD APU Zen 2c processor and AMD APU 8 CU (compute unit) RDNA2 GPU.

Arguably Valve's biggest handheld competitor on the market right now is the Nintendo Switch. Whilst the two handhelds are notably dissimilar on a number of levels, there are comparable elements in terms of their hardware. The Nintendo Switch, unlike the Steam Deck, does use its dock to improve the console's performance. In doing so, this allows Switch players to play their console on a range of screens freely without the added worry of performance issues.

With this feature included on the Switch, fans looking to buy the Steam Deck may have thought that it would include a similar feature as standard. IGN recently published a comprehensive comparison between the Steam Deck and Nintendo's current flagship model, the Switch OLED which you can read to find out more about the hardware of both handhelds.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Gets New Trailer and Poster

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf – the anime movie prequel to Netflix's Witcher series – has a new trailer and poster.

The action-packed trailer shows off multiple monsters, quests, and gory fights – essentially, exactly what you'd expect from a Witcher movie. We also get a glimpse of some of Nightmare of the Wolf's plotlines, including a look at lead character Vesemir's transformation into a Witcher, his quest alongside a witch, Tetra, and seemingly a battle featuring multiple Witchers.

That battle might just be against the enormous hoard of monsters seen in the new poster for the show (below):

Due to hit Netflix on August 23, Nightmare of the Wolf introduces us to Vesemir, the Witcher that will eventually become Geralt of Rivia's mentor (who will be played by Killing Eve's Kim Bodnia in the live-action show). We'll be shown Vesemir's early life as a jobbing monster hunter, and his quest to rid a politically fraught kingdom of a strange new creature.

For more, check out why Nightmare of the Wolf is an anime and not live-action, what we can expect from season 2 of the main The Witcher TV show, and the latest trailer for Henry Cavil’s Geralt adventures.

We’ve Gotten Our Best Ever Look at a Cancelled Duke Nukem Game

A trailer for a canceled Duke Nukem game from back in 2008 has surfaced online. The animation studio Janimation was hired by Gearbox at the time to create a cinematic for the game before the title was later scrapped by Gearbox, seemingly due to legal issues surrounding the franchise.

Gregor Punchatz, an animator best known for his work on the monster character models in Doom, headed up making the trailer in 2008. The cinematic was recently released on Punchatz's YouTube channel and shows a brief look at what could have been for Duke Nukem Begins – a supposed origin story for the series lead.

Acting as an origin story would make sense according to the Duke Nukem Begins' timeframe. With work on the trailer taking place in 2008, Duke Nukem Begins would likely have been Gearbox's first entry into the FPS series. Instead, the studio launched with Duke Nukem Forever in June 2011 to a mixed reception. At its time of release, IGN reviewed Duke Nukem Forever, scoring it a 5.5/10.

The mock-up trailer for Duke Nukem Begins, unlike other entries into the Duke Nukem franchise, depicts the game as a third-person shooter with four-player co-op. According to the trailer, the game would have looked to bring back a range of Duke's iconic weapons including his signature pistol and the freeze ray whilst also showing Duke beating enemies to death with their own arms.

In other news, IGN recently reported that the Swedish video games holding company Embracer Group recently announced that it will be adding 8 more studios to its collection. The acquisition will mean that the group will own Duke Nukem Forever developers 3D Realms as well as Gearbox Studios, which they acquired in February. With both companies now under Embracer, perhaps there is a very slim amount of hope for this Duke Nukem cinematic to become a reality.

Rick & Morty Season 5 Is Getting an Hour-Long Finale

Adult Swim has announced that Rick and Morty Season 5 will be concluding with an hour-long finale this September.

The Rick and Morty Season 5 finale will air on Sunday, September 5, at 11:00 pm EST, meaning there will be a short break between Episode 8, which aired on August 8, and the special double-length episode to cap off the season. A teaser from the season finale was posted online to tide fans over until then. Check it out below:

The clip sees Rick spinning the eclectic "wheel of things better than Morty" after Morty encourages Rick to replace him. The wheel lands on "Two Crows" after whizzing around all of the other options, which include Garbage Goober, Half a Paul Giamatti, Gene with Donkey Brains, Sentient S#!t, Bag of Meat, Kyle 2.0, and Jerry (Spin Again).

The first episode of Rick and Morty Season 5, "Mort Dinner Rick Andre," debuted on June 20 to coincide with Rick and Morty Day, a 24-hour celebration of the animated sci-fi sitcom that showcased behind-the-scenes footage, lookaheads for the season, and "special surprises" across TV, digital, and social media platforms.

IGN said the Rick and Morty Season 5 premiere offered an "enjoyable start to the new season" despite not being the "biggest or most daring season premiere the series has delivered." We praised the episode for allowing Morty to take center stage, proving he "can be just as funny," and "just as sad and just as self-destructive as his grandfather."

There's no denying that Rick and Morty have been through a lot, with years worth of Pickle Rick absurdity, infinite Morty's, Chris Parnell and Jerry and their adventures with a Meseeks Box, plus Rick's catchphrases like wubba lubba dub dub, but there are some things you (probably) still don't know about the show's titular duo.
