• Grounded: Obsidian Gets Back to its Roots with Hot and Hazy Update

It’s no secret that Grounded, Obsidian’s backyard survival game, is very different from anything the prolific RPG developer has made before — something the developers themselves have poked fun at in the past. But while the microscopic multiplayer adventure has seen success in its own right, even while still in preview, the upcoming Hot and Hazy update seems poised to give many fans more of what they might expect from Obsidian: lots of stats. With everything from character stats that let you upgrade your avatar’s abilities, to weapon upgrades that increase deadliness, to new armor classes with gameplay consequences, Grounded will get a whole lot nerdier and RPG-like later this month.

One of the biggest additions Hot and Hazy adds is a collectible called Milk Molars, which lets you upgrade stats like max health, max stamina, how quickly your character gets thirsty or hungry, and how many mutations you can equip at once. Going forward, not every adventurer will be the same, with players being able to upgrade their avatars in different ways by collecting and spending this new currency. Even more interesting, you’ll be able to buy group upgrades as well, which give a boost to the entire party.

Similarly, weapon upgrades will give you a chance to enhance your weapon with increased damage and durability, and even apply status effects. For example, if you collect mint candies and apply them to your weapon, it’ll give it the “fresh” status effect that bestows it with unique properties.

Armor has also been given an RPG-like rework, and now all armor will be classified as light, medium, or heavy, each of which has tradeoffs between stamina and protection, as a million other RPGs have taught you. Wearing light armor gives you less protection in a fight but allows you to regenerate stamina faster, while heavy armor is the opposite — yet another way for players to define their own play styles and occupy different roles within a party of players.

Of course, there’s no point in having all these new tools if you don’t have some new dangers to confront them with, and the Hot and Hazy update adds four new environments, including the new Sandbox Desert biome, and an upgrade to an existing one: The Haze.

The Sandbox Desert is a giant sandbox in the backyard where exposure to direct sunlight applies a new Sizzling effect on you that begins to kill you over time, forcing you to dash between sources of shade before you get burned to a crisp. Out in the desert you’ll find new enemies to fight, buried treasure to uncover, and other secrets that might make the scorching trek worth your time.

On the other hand, there’s The Haze, which has been revamped to be more than just a bleak patch of poisonous smog. Now you’ll find creepy mushrooms that explode, new enemies, and even a secret lab to be explored and plundered. But traversing this highly toxic area will mean gearing up with suitable equipment, like a gas mask, to make the hostile zone semi-habitable.

In our early access review last year, we liked Grounded’s survival RPG core, but lamented its lack of meaningful content. So it’s really awesome to see Obsidian doubling down on the RPG elements with the Hot and Hazy Update, which looks to add exactly what the game needed. I’m excited to jump in and start min-maxing my character when the update hits later this month.

Midnight Mass Director Mike Flanagan Is Adapting Edgar Allan Poe for Netflix Next

Horror director Mike Flanagan is working on a new series for Netflix, based on a stories written by Edgar Allan Poe.

Revealed by Netflix on Twitter, The Fall of the House of Usher will be a limited series from Flanagan, based on multiple works from Edgar Allan Poe. Those works will presumably include the short story referred to by the title, The Fall of the House of Usher, a gothic tale released in 1839. It was later published as part of Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, a collection of Poe's gothic fiction.

Flanagan has recently made a name for himself through his limited series for Netflix. His first two, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, were also adapted from famous old horror novels. Flanagan recently followed those shows up with Midnight Mass – a story of his own creation – and is also working on an adaptation of The Midnight Club, a 1994 novel written by Christopher Pike. He's also adapting Pike's 1992 novel The Season of Passage, a horror story set on Mars.

Midnight Mass scored highly with critics, and IGN gave it 9/10, stating that it is Flanagan's best work to date. Prior to working in television, Flanagan was best known for his films Hush, Oculus, and Gerald's Game. A big Stephen King fan, he also directed Doctor Sleep.

Microsoft Reveals Adidas Sneakers Themed After the Original Xbox

Microsoft has revealed that it will be partnering with Adidas to bring the world its first-ever set of console-inspired sneakers.

In an article on its website, Microsoft announced that the collaboration will feature an all-new Xbox-inspired sneaker, called the Xbox 20th Forum Tech, in honor of the original console's 20th anniversary.

Sporting a green and black color scheme with added translucent details to finish, the Adidas sneakers take inspiration from the special edition Halo-themed original Xbox console in 2001. Microsoft says that aesthetic inspiration for the footwear was guided by the company's past.

"The Adidas Forum Tech design balances nostalgia while embracing modern technology and is symbolic of how we look at our own Xbox history — celebrating the last 20 years and looking ahead to the limitless future of gaming," says James Monosmith, Senior Sales and Marketing Manager at Xbox.

While the Xbox 20th Forum Tech sneakers may have been the first to be announced in the partnership between Microsoft and Adidas, they certainly won't be the last. Over the next few months, fans should expect to see further reveals for additional sneakers, with each inspired by the various Xbox console generations of past and present. A report back in May suggested that the Adidas collaboration would include four shoe designs.

Details surrounding how to get your hands on a pair of the limited edition lines are limited. However, Microsoft has said that fans will be able to purchase at least one set from the range later this year. For those of you hoping to find out more about upcoming drops and announcements from the Xbox x Adidas partnership, Microsoft recommends following @Xbox on Twitter.

This isn't the first time in recent months that Microsoft has entered into a partnership with a non-tech related company. In July, the brand partnered up with Krispy Kreme to bring UK fans its Xbox-themed Nexus Level Doughnut. Meanwhile, in sneaker news, Nintendo earlier this year announced their own limited-edition themed footwear. Partnering with Puma, the company announced its very own Animal Crossing New Horizons-inspired shoes.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Documentary Celebrates a Powerful Superhero Legacy

Miles Morales has made quite an impact in the first decade of his existence, growing from heir to the Spider-Man mantle in Marvel's Ultimate Universe to star of both an animated feature film and a video game. That evolution is the subject of a new mini-documentary from Sony Pictures Animation, a three-part YouTube series dubbed Creator to Creator.

IGN can exclusively debut the first episode of Creator to Creator. Check out the video player above or the embed below to see the minds behind the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the video game Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the comic series Miles Morales: Spider-Man talk shop:

The video features quite an impressive creative lineup. Representing Into the Spider-Verse are writer/producer Phil Lord, producer Christopher Miller, and director Peter Ramsey. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Senior Animator James Ham and Creative Director Brian Horton offer a game development perspective, while comics scribe Saladin Ahmed (whose work on the ongoing Miles Morales: Spider-Man series helped earn him a nomination for Best Comic Book Writer of 2020) rounds out the talent pool.

The video should offer Marvel fans much more insight into the work that goes into expanding on and adapting Miles' story for new media, and the struggle in crafting a character who is simultaneously relatable and representative. And as it turns out, these various incarnations of the character wind up influencing each other.

All three episodes of Creator to Creator will go live on Sony Pictures Animation's YouTube channel at 10am PT on October 6. The second episode deals with the challenge of making Miles a "universal hero" and the question of authenticity, while the third focuses on the visual aspects of the character and how the comics inspired the look of Miles Morales in the movie and game.

Sony is currently developing a sequel to Into the Spider-Verse, with a new trio of directors tapped to build on the 2018 original. We can expect even more Spider-heroes next time around, with Issa Rae cast as the Jessica Drew version of Spider-Woman.

On the games side, Sony recently revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which looks to put players in control of both Miles and Peter Parker as they deal with Venom and Kraven the Hunter. Spider-Man 2 will be darker in tone than the previous two games.

Over in the comics, Miles recently dealt with his own version of the Clone Saga, and he's getting a drastically different new costume to celebrate his tenth anniversary.
