• Y: The Last Man Season 1 Episode 8 Review – “Ready. Aim. Fire.”

Spoilers follow for Y: The Last Man's eight episode, "Ready. Aim. Fire.," which premieres Monday, Oct. 18 on FX on Hulu.

Y: The Last Man zeroed in on one of its three ongoing stories this week in "Ready. Aim. Fire.," unfurling a mystery regarding the PriceMax crew and all the converging combustible elements housed under that roof. Threading through all of it was Roxanne's lie, which was revealed over several flashbacks, allowing this chapter to be the best of the series so far (though we're in "too little, too late" territory here), saddling up to both the themes of survival and the ever-enticing "apocalypse reinvention fantasy."

Missi Pyle's Roxanne was gifted a few extra psychotic layers this week when we learned that she'd tricked all the others from the women's shelter into following her, exploiting various methods of psychology to galvanize them against men while having them trust her as a former societal authority figure. This week, we found out that Roxanne was merely an ex-PriceMax employee who discovered she enjoyed killing women with reckless abandon whenever they tried to enter her domain. Her life as a police detective was just a story, though it was still one peppered with actual experiences from her own life, making her performance natural and the lie easier to sell.

Roxanne was able to evolve in "Ready. Aim. Fire.," moving from what was seemingly a one-note brute to a cunning manipulator, and Pyle's performance here was able to show us the cracks in her facade, especially when we watched Roxanne shoot a former member, Kate, in the back (which was the woman Hero tried to save back in "Karen and Benji"). Roxanne is now, basically, convincing these women to do exactly what she did. She's getting them to shed their former lives and build themselves back up anew, into stronger versions, with new names, all hating on the same (now) non-existent enemy. It's very Negan-esque and it surrounds Roxanne with a pack to protect her.

Trapped within this big reveal about Roxanne are Hero, Sam, and Nora all trying to survive the cult drama. With Sam and Nora being pushed out, both for reasons tied to men (Sam being a man and Nora not hating her late husband), Hero finds herself being drawn more into the PriceMax mind-warp. She's at odds, at times, with Roxanne's techniques of trying to make her resent her father and brother, but it's still an enticing offer for her (though perhaps any reason to not reach out to her mother is enough for her). Sam and Nora are in danger, however.

Not in immediate mortal peril, no, but they're not long for this group. Sam takes the initiative and leaves (finding himself in a school with a kind, but maybe crazy, principal who's convinced kids will somehow return to class) but that option's not available to Nora. And so Roxanne clashed directly with a parent willing to do absolutely anything to keep their kid safe, which is a force unto itself.

Interestingly enough, Nora didn't pull the "Hero is the president's daughter" card yet, but she also didn't have to. First she lit up the entire PriceMax, causing huge fire that depleted the stock. And when that didn't work the way she wanted (she'd hoped it would convince Hero to leave), she fortuitously found evidence of Roxanne's lie. Now she's the woman behind Roxanne and the newly dubbed "Daughters of the Amazon."

This episode's focus on this one story, which also happens to be the most surprisingly interesting arc of the season, allowed for an intriguing probe into the crafting of a cult. Roxanne's motives are selfish, and her methods when cornered can be homicidal, but overall this gang is supportive and strengthening endeavor. A harsh one, most definitely, but right now they're all keeping to themselves. They're not out there stealing from others or causing mayhem on the open road.

As we leave them though, the Daughters of the Amazon are being led by two women, who don't like each other, who will do whatever it takes to come out on top, which makes it a very engrossing and unpredictable storyline.

Smallville Animated Series Is ‘Very Real’, Will Tell Stories of Where the Characters Are Now

After word spread about an animated Smallville series via an unlikely source, original series stars Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have confirmed it's in development, and said that it will address questions of where the original characters are now.

Speaking to IGN, Welling explained what had happened when he let slip in a Cameo video that Smallville could return in animated form. It turns out, when he'd asked the recipient to keep it secret, he wasn't joking: "I was being honest with that moment and I was like, 'Literally, don't tell anybody.' And that person posted it 30 seconds later."

Welling made clear that the project is "very real", with Rosenbaum adding, "It's something that we're passionate about. Something we love. Hopefully we're going to obviously share, with Warner Brothers, when the time is right. And hopefully we'll be able to work with them. And that's about all we can say right now."

Asked about what kind of stories the series could tell, the stars were vague, but did make clear that they see a lot of scope to continue naturally from the original series. "There's a lot of stories," explained Rosenbaum. "I mean, honestly, after Smallville ended people had a lot of questions. And who's to say what was happening a few years later? And where did these characters go? And how'd they come back? So there's always a story. There's always a story to be told."

Welling made clear that this would be a story told past the end of Smallville's original run, rather than in the same timeline: "Here we are, 20 years later since it started and one of the most frequent questions is, where do you see your characters now? So that's literally what we'll be addressing."

Smallville ran from 2001 to 2011, using its 10 seasons to tell an extended origin story for Superman, Lex Luthor, and more. After the final episode, Clark Kent had fully embraced his role as Superman, and a flash forward told us that Luthor had been elected President, while Lois and Clark were discussing marriage. It seems safe to say there are story strands for the animated series to pull on.

Smallville: The Complete Series is coming to Blu-ray for the first time ever on October 19th.

Arcane, Riot’s New Netflix Series, Will Be Open For Co-Streaming On Twitch

Twitch streamers can breathe a sigh of relief as Netflix announced it will allow Twitch users to co-stream the first episode of Arcane, the upcoming animated series set in the League of Legends universe. By the sound of it, streamers don't have to worry about any DMCA takedowns.

The Arcane Twitter account announced the co-streaming details on Monday, ahead of the series premiere on November 6. The tweet specifically mentions that only the first episode of the series is safe to stream and can only be streamed on Twitch.

"Experience the first episode of #Arcane with your favorite streamers, representing 40+ countries and broadcasting in 20+ languages on @Twitch," according to the Arcane Twitter account. "Runeterra awaits, see you November 6th."

Given League of Legends' popularity on Twitch, having popular League of Legends streamers co-host and commentate on the first episode of Arcane seems like a good way to market the series to fans.

Streamers are used to avoiding copyright content in video games with many games now offering a streamer setting that blocks licensed material from appearing on stream. Otherwise, streamers could potentially be penalized with a DMCA takedown and lose access to their channels.

Arcane takes place before the events of League of Legends in the city of Piltover. The series follows LoL heroes Vi and Jinx, who will be voiced by Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell respectively.

The full voice cast for Arcane also includes Kevin Alejandro as Jayce, Katie Leung as Caitlyn, and Jason Spisak as Silco.

Riot Games must have more plans for movies and TV after the company hired an ex-Netflix executive to oversee their growing multimedia ambitions.

Arcane is the latest in a long line of upcoming Netflix video game adaptations. Here is every Netflix video game movie and TV series in the works.

Back in Stock on Amazon: PS5-Compatible WD Black SN850 1TB M.2 SSD with Heatsink

Amazon finally has the PS5-compatible WD Black SN850 1TB SSD with heatsink back in stock. This is currently the most popular SSD to get for your PS5 internal storage upgrade. It's blazing fast drive with transfer speeds rated at up to 7,000 MB/s and a PCIe Gen4 interface and it comes preinstalled with a heatsink. It's also confirmed by Western Digital themselves to be compatible with the PS5.

Lowest Price Ever for a PS5-Compatible SSD with Heatsink: XPG GAMMIX S70 Blade 1TB M.2 SSD

This is the latest SSD that's specifically designed for your PS5 storage upgrade. It also happens to be the lowest priced PS5-compatible 1TB SSD with heatsink available. In fact, it's even less expensive than most compatible SSDs without heatsink. The S70 Blade boasts transfer rates up to 7,400 MB/s and a PCIe Gen4 interface. It includes a PS5-compatible low-profile aluminum heatsink, but for whatever reason you'll have to put it on the SSD itself (which isn't hard, it's just adhesive).

Sony WH1000XM4 Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones (As Good As Bose)

The ever popular and highly rated Sony WH1000XM4 headphones are back down to $248. This is the lowest price of the year by $30. 17% Off Tales of Arise for PS5

This is the first time we've seen the PS5 version of the game discounted anywhere. Tales of Arise is one of the best Tales games in a long while. I've beaten the game myself, and I haven't had as much fun playing a Tales game since Vesperia and Symphonia. If you've seen the gameplay videos or played the demo at all, you're probably already aware that Tales of Arise graphics are a massive improvement over its predecessors. That's because Bandai Namco abandoned its proprietary graphics engine for the much more powerful and flexible Unreal Engine. Aside from the revamped graphics, expect the same well-loved gameplay from before, including real-time combo-chaining battles, a wonderfully generic yet epic storyline, and cringe-worthy yet endearing character skits.

65" LG CX 4K OLED Smart TV for $1399.99

Refurbished with 90-day Woot (Amazon) Warranty

Note that this is a refurbished model with a 90-day Woot warranty. Woot is owned and operated by Amazon. The CX-series is LG's 2020 OLED TV. The OLED panel blows away any IPS, VA, or TN monitor in black levels, color rendition, response time, and HDR. The new 2021 C1-series model has very negligible improvements over the CX-series and in terms of image quality, they're practically identical. The CX OLED TV is a perfect match for the PS5 console because it has HDMI 2.1 inputs which can output 4K at 120Hz.

    2021 LG C1 65" 4K OLED TV Price Drop

Now with 6 Months of Free HBO Max

Today the newest LG 65" 4K OLED TV has dropped to the lowest price we've ever seen. The LG C1 OLED TV improves upon last year's highly-rated CX model with an upgraded A9 Gen 4 processor that delivers slightly better image quality, better 4K scaling, and improved audio handling as well as a new webOS smart TV redesign. The C1 OLED TV also looks good when paired to a gaming PC with an RTX 30 series video card because it has HDMI 2.1 inputs that support 4K at 120Hz and G-SYNC. It's easily one of the best (if not the best) TVs on the market right now. For a limited time, you also get 6 free months of HBO Max, so you can catch up on blockbuster movies like Godzilla vs Kong, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, and more, as well as upcoming movies like Dune and The Matrix Resurrections.

Rubber Encased Hex Dumbbells on Sale

If you've been stockpiling exercise equipment to work out at home, you might have realized that the cost of weights adds up. You could be paying upwards of $2-$4 per pound of weights if you've been buying stuff at regular retail price. Deals like these aren't flashy, but they're very welcome. The dumbbells listed above cost just over $1 per pound. They're rubber encased to protect your floor, and the chrome finished ergo handles are textured for a better grip.

Alienware Aurora R12 RTX 3080 PC for $2099.99

Do you need a rig that can run Battlefield 2042 in 4K? If you've been on the lookout for the extremely elusive RTX 3080 video card for your (up to 4K) gaming needs, then check out this ready-to-go prebuilt Alienware Aurora gaming PC from Dell. The $2200 PC comes equipped with an 11th gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, 512GB SSD, and a separate 1TB hard drive for storage. The RTX 3080 is way more powerful than the previous generation's best video card, the RTX 2080 Ti, and is the best recommended video card for 4K gaming. The RTX 3080 is the card I'm currently using for the BF2042 open beta, and I can run the game at 4K resolution and over 60fps consistently at medium to high settings.

HP OMEN RTX 3080 Gaming PC for $1899.99

Select "RTX 3080" and "800W Power Supply" as upgrades

Here's another RTX 3080 config that's worth a look. Although its overall specs aren't as good as the Alienware config listed above, you simply won't find an RTX 3080 equipped pre-built PC for a cheaper price. In fact, the RTX 3080 by itself probably goes for a similar price on eBay. It's paired with the latest AMD Ryzen 5 5600X processor (which can be upgraded). The 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD is lean, but you can easily pick out and swap in your own components.

Check Which Games Are Playable On Steam Deck Before Launch

The Steam Deck promises to cram a gaming PC into a handheld format, and now Valve is testing out what games work well on the platform.

Valve is introducing a system of symbols to tell players how individual games perform on Steam Deck. There are four tiers of compatibility within this new system.

    Verified

    • A green check indicates the game passed Valve's tests for controller input, display, seamlessness, and system support.

    Playable

    • A yellow symbol means the game is playable, but may need some tweaking to be an enjoyable experience. Valve says this may mean selecting a community-made controller configuration, using the touchscreen, and more.

    Unsupported

    • A gray symbol means the game does not work on Steam Deck. An easy example of this is Half-Life Alyx, which requires a VR headset to play.

    Unknown

    • A question mark means Valve has not checked the game for compatibility yet.

This system will also impact how games are displayed in the Steam Store on the handheld. Only games that are Steam Deck Verified will be displayed on the store. The badges will also be displayed on the thumbnail for each game in your Steam Library, telling you how it will run before you launch.

Valve says they plan to release compatibility for many games in the Steam catalog before the Steam Deck launches. The review will also continue beyond launch. You can find more information on this process on the official Steam Deck website.

For more, check out our Steam Deck hands-on from earlier this year. Or, check out Valve's official Steam Deck teardown to get a look at the inside of the device.
