• Elden Ring: Here’s What Comes in Each Edition

Elden Ring is set to release for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on February 25, 2022. Anyone who buys the PS4 or Xbox One version will get a free next-gen upgrade as well, which is always nice to see. Elden Ring is the next game from the makers of tough-but-satisfying action RPGs like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

The game comes in a standard edition as well as a cool-looking collector's edition, and it's available for preorder now. Read on to see what comes in each edition and where you can lock in your Elden Ring preorder.

    Elden Ring Collector's Edition

    PS5

    PS4

Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One

Preorder the collector's edition of Elden Ring, and you'll receive the game itself along with the following items:

    • Statue of Malenia – Blade of Miquella (9 inches)
    • Exclusive steelbook
    • 40-page hardcover artbook
    • Digital soundtrack

    Elden Ring (Standard Edition)

    PS5

    PS4 (includes free PS5 upgrade)

    Xbox One / Series X

As for right now, the standard edition is the only one available. There are no separate editions (yet?) for PS5 and Xbox Series X, but we have confirmed that the PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades will be free for anyone who owns the previous-gen version. When that changes, we'll update the info above. Still, you can preorder it at the retailers above.

    What is Elden Ring?

Elden Ring is an action-RPG that represents a confluence of fandoms. On one hand, you have From Software's Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the exceptional, brooding games mentioned above. On the other, you have George R.R. Martin, the mind that brought you Game of Thrones, helping build out the story.

As for the game itself, it's an action RPG that doesn't look like it will stray far from the gameplay popularized in the Dark Souls franchise. You can expect super-precise combat controls and towering bosses to take down. These games are certainly challenging, but if you keep trying, you'll likely learn the enemies' moves and improve your skills enough to succeed.

As for the story? From Software's games have never been very forthcoming with their stories, even within the games themselves. Bandai Namco released an Elden Ring plot summary, but it doesn't help all that much, either. As far as I can tell, a bunch of demigods each have a piece of the powerful Elden Ring. Your job is to relieve them of these pieces in order to put the ring back together.

Elden Ring Will Have a Free Next-Gen Upgrade

Anyone who buys Elden Ring for PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free. The same goes for Xbox: buy it for Xbox One, and you'll get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X or Series S version. That's something of a relief, as many games don't offer a free upgrade path, and many PS5/Series X|S games cost $69.99 instead of $59.99.

    Preorder Bonuses

While no universal preorder bonuses are available for Elden Ring, several retailers have their own unique preorder bonuses.

    • Best Buy – free steelbook case
    • GameStop – free spectral steed whistle replica

Sony Has Invested in Devolver Digital

Update: Sony has confirmed that it has invested in Devolver Digital. The official PlayStation Twitter account today posted a Tweet stating that it is "honored to be an investor."

Original story: Sony is reportedly investing in Devolver Digital, the indie publisher behind the likes of Hotline Miami, Inscryption, and Death’s Door.

According to a report from GamesIndustry.biz, Sony is set to make a 5% investment in the company. This follows the announcement that Devolver Digital has been valued at $950 million after being floated on AIM, a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange.

The GamesIndustry.biz report notes that the European law firm that advised Devolver, Fieldfisher, noted that the company has received a “significant strategy investment from a key industry player.” The report then states that such a key industry player is apparently Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Devolver Digital has two headquarters; one in Austin, Texas and another in London, UK. This new move onto the stock exchange has provided the company with $50 million in gross proceeds, which are set to be used to expand the company.

Devolver started back in 2009, and rose to prominence with games such as Hotline Miami and Shadow Warrior. It is now one of the most notable publishers of indie games, having this year published game-of-the-year contender Inscryption, Loop Hero, and Death's Door. Early next year it will release Weird West, the new game from the founder of Arkane Studios.

Rust Armorer’s Lawyers Say Fatal Live Round Could Have Been Left as ‘Sabotage’

A lawyer for armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of the firearms used on the Rust movie set, has suggested that someone may have deliberately put a live round into the gun which killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

“We know there was a live round in a box of dummy rounds that shouldn’t have been there,” said lawyer Jason Bowles in an interview with Today.

“We have people who had left the set, who had walked out because they were disgruntled. We have a time frame between 11am and 1pm, approximately, that day, in which the firearms at times were unattended, so there was opportunity to tamper with this scene.”

Bowles claims that his client had used ammunition on the set of Rust from a box of bullets which were labelled as dummy rounds, but he believes a third party may have added live rounds to this supply.

“We’re afraid that could have been what happened here, that somebody intended to sabotage this set with a live round intentionally placed in a box of dummies,” Bowles said on ABC television’s Good Morning America.

“We’re not saying anybody had any intent there was going to be a tragedy of homicide,” he added, “but they wanted to do something to cause a safety incident on set. That’s what we believe happened.”

Despite these new claims, Rust Movie Productions has said it is investigating the incident and had no official complaints about safety on the set. Local authorities are investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed as yet.

Asked if he thought a crew member could be responsible for adding live rounds to the dummy box, Bowles said: “I think you can’t rule anybody out at this point.”

Before the fatal shooting, several camera operators quit the film in protest of what they claim were long hours and objectionable working conditions.

Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on October 21 when a gun held by actor and producer Alec Baldwin, fired a live round. Baldwin had been advised that the weapon was “cold” – a term used in the industry meaning it was safe to use. Since the incident, further details have come to light about the shooting.

Bowles says that Gutierrez-Reed checked the gun before giving it to assistant director, Dave Halls. She reportedly spun the cylinder, checking each of the six bullets which she believed were dummy rounds. Halls then took the weapon inside the church where Baldwin was rehearsing a scene.

Authorities in Santa Fe are continuing to investigate the fatal incident.

Switch Sells Another 8.3 Million, but Nintendo Reduces Annual Target

Update: Speaking as part of a briefing reported on by Reuters, Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawa, discussed the company's reduced annual Switch target in relation to the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. "We can't produce enough to meet the demand we are expecting during the upcoming holiday season," he said. "Currently, there is no sign of improvement and the situation continues to be severe so I can't say how long it will continue."

Original story: Nintendo’s latest financial results have revealed that the company sold 8.3 million Switch consoles over the past six months, bringing the Switch’s lifetime sales to close to 93 million.

In Nintendo’s financial report for the six months ended September 30, 2021, the company announced 8.3 million Switch hardware sales, with 6.45 million of those being standard Switches and 1.82 million being the Switch Lite. While sales are down year-on-year for the console, the spike provided in 2020 by Animal Crossing: New Horizons was always going to be tough to follow.

The six-month period saw operating profit drop 24.5%, dropping to 219.9 billion yen ($1.9 billion) from the 291.4 billion yen ($2.5 billion) taken in during the same six months in 2020. Net sales also decreased, dropping 18.9% to 624.5 billion yen ($5.4 billion).

Alongside this drop, Nintendo announced that it has cut its annual Switch shipment forecast from 25.5 million units to 24 million units, noting the effects of the global semiconductor shortage. However, the company does expect to see higher success in the near future thanks to the Switch OLED, Metroid Dread, and upcoming Pokémon games Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl and Legends: Arceus.

The additional 8.3 million sales brings the Switch up to 92.87 million sales. That means it is closing in on Nintendo’s best seller, the Wii, which achieved 101.63 million sales. The Switch has already eclipsed Nintendo’s third best selling console, the NES, which achieved 61.91 million sales.

In software, the Switch has sold 681 million games to date. The system’s best-selling game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 38.74 million copies sold. Unsurprisingly after its popularity in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes in at number 2 with 34.85 million copies sold. Super Mash Bros. Ultimate grabs the final podium position with 25.71 million sales.

In more from Nintendo, the Switch N64 controllers are seemingly sold out until 2022, players are reporting issues with the Expansion Pack games for Switch Online, and a hacker called Bowser has pled guilty to piracy charges.
