• Unity Is Buying Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital, the VFX Studio Behind Lord of the Rings

Game engine maker Unity has announced its intent to acquire Weta Digital, the New Zealand-based VFX studio owned by Peter Jackson that's behind the special effects in films including Jackson's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as Avatar, Avengers, and the final two seasons of Game of Thrones.

Weta Digital's VFX and tech span facial capture, anatomical modeling, simulation and deformation of moving objects, procedural hair and fur modeling, and a number of other advanced techniques that have gained it notoriety over the years. The planned acquisition, which is expected to cost Unity $1.62 billion in a mix of cash and stock, will see Unity acquire its tech and assets as well as 275 Weta engineers who will join the company. The deal is expected to close in Q4 of this year.

It's worth pointing out that this acquisition is being announced at a time of reckoning for Weta Digital. Just over a year ago, a local news investigation uncovered numerous allegations of a toxic work environment, bullying, sexism, and harassment. A subsequent independent review affirmed some of these allegations, after which its founders and CEO pledged to implement the report's recommendations to improve work culture.

When asked by IGN about how Unity intended to handle work culture issues at Weta, Unity senior VP and general manager of Unity Create Marc Whitten offers this response:

"At Unity we take very seriously that we build an inclusive environment and workplace for all of our employees, whether they're coming in from an acquisition or whether they're — we're a huge believer, it's our corporate values around respect and empathy and opportunity for everyone. It's something we've always spent a lot of time on in building our overall culture. In our own diligence, we made sure we felt good about the culture and the people that we're bringing in and how we're making sure we can take the culture that is Unity and ensure that everybody working there feels that they have a great place to work."

As a part of the acquisition, Weta's VFX teams will continue to exist as WetaFX, still owned by Peter Jackson and led by CEO Prem Akkaraju, and will continue doing film VFX under Unity's Create Solutions team. However, Weta's tech and assets will eventually be integrated into Unity's cloud platform so that anyone using Unity can access them.

Whitten said that it didn't have a firm timeline as to when this integration would happen, but said when it did, it would represent a meaningful shift in how accessible VFX technology and assets are to not just filmmakers of all sizes, but game developers, AR and VR creators, and others. He pointed out that Unity wants these tools to be usable not just by professional artists, but by everyone, including hobbyist creators working on YouTube and TikTok.

"I think you'll see levels of detail that you may not have imagined before. Even bringing non-realistic things to life in really interesting ways. And you'll see the ability for more people to create in a higher level of 3D than maybe they have the tools for today."

More specifically, Whitten suggests that "procedural creation" or AI-assisted creation of assets will open the door to much more accessible creation of 3D assets, even by people who don't necessarily have a lot of expertise in the field.

"A good example is the facial animation they use for motion capture," he says. "[Weta] actually thinks about how blood flows through your capillaries at every millimeter down from your skin through the muscle, and simulate it so when they then go back and do the mocap it feels more alive in ways you won't necessarily recognize — you won't say, 'Oh, they got the blood flow right,' — it's just that by doing it right it gets closer to something that looks like reality and therefore feels better to you. That doesn't mean everything needs to look like reality; there's lots of ways to do the same thing as a very stylized or even retro or whatever, but that same powerful set of procedural tools hopefully allow the next generation of creators to do things they can't even imagine today."

Alongside the tech, Whitten says we'll eventually see assets from films Weta works on appear in Unity's asset store. Nothing branded or recognizable of course (so no, you can't just slap King Kong in your video game) but assets previously used in blockbuster films such as forests, cobblestones, and animal movement might one day end up available for use by anyone working in Unity.

Put together, Whitten ties Unity's plans for Weta into a vision of a word we're hearing a lot these days: metaverse. He says that whatever the metaverse ends up being, one thing is for sure: it's going to need a lot of 3D content to populate it. And that's good news for people making things in Unity.

"It's going to be an extraordinary increase in the number of people who are making 3D content because that's where the creativity will actually come from," he says. "To me, the beautiful idea is getting all the way to that level of empowering any individual to create in 3D in ways we probably aren't even thinking about right now."

John Wick 4 Title Seemingly Revealed As Filming Wraps

The title for John Wick 4 has seemingly been revealed. The legendary assassin's next adventure is titled "John Wick Chapter 4: Hagakure," according to an Instagram post by actor Shamier Anderson.

Click on the second photo in the Instagram post below to see it.

Anderson posted several photos from the production of the film, including a selfie with star Keanu Reeves and a picture of a drawstring bag with "John Wick Chapter 4: Hagakure" printed on the side.

Anderson plays a character named "Tracker," and joins fellow cast members including martial arts star Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard (It), Laurence Fishburne, and more.

"Hagakure" specifically refers to the book Hagakure, or "Hidden by the Leaves." Written in 1716 by a samurai named Yamamoto Tsunetomo, who served Saga domain daimyo Nabeshima Mitsushige for 30 years until the daimyo's death in 1700. Later in his life, Tsunetomo narrated his thoughts on bushido, the way of the samurai, disparaging it as the "way of dying." Tsunetomo served his lord during a time of relative peace after 1638, effectively turning the book into a reflection of maintaining a samurai class in an era that was quickly leaving them behind.

"The work, written in 1716, is well-known for the quote 'The way of the warrior is death,' giving rise to the misconception of Bushidō as a code of death," writes Osaka Gakuin University Professor Kasaya Kazuhiko in 2019. "However, this phrase is not intended as a compulsion to die. Rather, it teaches that, through a constant consciousness of death, it is possible to achieve a state of freedom that transcends life and death, whereby 'it is possible to perfectly fulfill one’s calling as a warrior.'"

Hagakure also asserted that samurai are responsible for guiding their lords responsibly, stating “The ultimate loyalty for a retainer is to admonish his lord to govern the nation.”

We'll have to wait and see what aspects of bushido and samurai lifestyle John Wick 4 employs, but with stars like Japanese-British pop star Rina Sawayama, Mortal Kombat's Hiroyuki Sanada, and Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen, a deeper focus on Japanese themes wouldn't be out of character for the martial arts-driven franchise.

Spawn Creator Todd McFarlane and DJ Steve Aoki Launch ‘Oddkey’ NFT Platform

Todd McFarlane has never been afraid to roll the dice and try something new. He’s also a strident believer in helping comics creators maintain ownership of their creations, which is why he’s stepping into the booming NFT arena and partnering with music superstar DJ Steve Aoki to launch a digital art marketplace called Oddkey.com. The NFT platform, which is powered by Metaplex, will allow artists from comics, science fiction and music to sell and auction their digital creations on the Solana blockchain.

“It’s an important component for me,” says McFarlane, noting his desire to provide a sort-of safe space for creators in the brave new world of digital art. The desire for control and to ensure he reaped the biggest rewards from his own creativity has helped define his career. It’s what led him to ditch Marvel, help spearhead Image Comics and launch his signature creation, Spawn. Less than a year away from the company’s 30th anniversary, McFarlane says the parallels between this NFT venture and the creator-owned comics imprint are impossible to miss.

Aoki, a self-described techno-optimist who frequently infuses his music with tech sensibilities, embraced NFTs early on. When the idea to create a marketplace for digital art, he reached out to McFarlane.

“We've been friends for a long time and we’ve talked about collaborating,” Aoki says. “I always wanted to create something bigger that represents creators. And I thought, who gets this better than someone who has built a business and an empire that's supported other creators and done it for decades? And that’s Todd.”

McFarlane and Aoki say their NFT marketplace will mirror the arrangement that established Image Comics as a creator-owned powerhouse. “It’s generally the Image model where we offer creators the same deal to go off on their own, do what they want and keep what they make. They maintain complete control of their work and keep most of the money,” according to McFarlane.

Adds Aoki: “We've been meticulously putting it together, making sure it's a place where it makes sense for other people, just like it makes sense for us as artists and creators.”

NFTs have gained prominence in rapid time as artists realize the potential for major financial windfalls. It’s not just comics, either. The CEO of EA believes the gaming industry will embrace NFTs in the very near future.

Both men won’t just be running the marketplace. They will also be contributing their own digital creations. Aoki plans to create exclusive NFTs featuring his music, and he teases that he and his partner are going to collaborate on “some interesting new ideas” for OddKey.

If you’re wondering about the origin story behind the name of the marketplace, it was a compromise because the two creative geniuses couldn’t figure out a way to work both their names in to a title they agreed on. “So we chopped off the first letter in Todd and removed “Ao” from Steve’s name, and that’s how we wound up with OddKey, “ explains McFarlane. “So we're still getting sort of our names in there without it becoming too obvious.”

The digital art market also provides a rare opportunity for fans to actually own some original McFarlane art. The artist hasn’t sold any of his original artwork since he left Marvel in the early '90s, making his classic Spider-Man art some of the most valuable pages in the original art marketplace. Good luck finding any McFarlane-drawn Spawn art, either. He’s held on to virtually all of his Spawn pages, but he says he will be creating new digital art that fans can purchase.

“I'm still holding onto my original artwork. I can't quite cross that line yet, but I can at least crack the door open and go, 'Hey, for the first time you can own original Spawn art. It's just going to be in digital form here on OddKey.'”

The fact that both he and Aoki are creators with established track records of operating on their terms is something McFarlane views as a strong reason for artists to consider OddKey.

“If you're interested in this [NFT] space and you're looking around, you may want to check us out, cause you can go hang out with a bunch of creative guys like us, who have lived the life you’re pursuing, and basically done what you've done, and basically got all the scars of the war that you've gone through," says McFarlane. "The alternative is you can go to some venture capital companies who will try to build it up before selling, and skim off your hard work.”

In other Spawn news, McFalrane recently expanded his long-running series into a full-blown "Spawn Universe." There's also been new progress on the long-gestating Spawn movie reboot, with Broken City's Brian Tucker coming aboard to pen a new screenplay.

Meanwhile, a number of Image Comics creators have banded together to form a union called Comic Book Workers United, though the publisher has refused to voluntarily recognize the union.
