WB’s MultiVersus Officially Announced, Features Batman, Arya Stark, and More

Warner Bros has officially announced MultiVersus, a Super Smash Bros-like fighter developed by Player First Games that brings together characters from shows like Scooby Doo, Adventure Time, Loony Tunes, and even Game of Thrones. It is set to release in 2022 for consoles and PC, and will be free-to-play.

MultiVersus will support 1v1, 2v2, and 4-player free-for-all matches, set on stages themed around the characters available in the game, including the Batcave, and Jake and Finn's Treefort. An incomplete roster has already been revealed, with more to be announced, and each one will be voiced by their original acting talent. So far the characters include:

    • Batman, voiced by Kevin Conroy
    • Superman, voiced by George Newbern
    • Wonder Woman, voiced by Abby Trott
    • Harley Quinn, voiced by Tara Strong
    • Shaggy (Scooby-Doo), voiced by Matthew Lillard
    • Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes), voiced by Eric Bauza
    • Arya Stark (Game of Thrones), voiced by Maisie Williams
    • Jake the Dog (Adventure Time), voiced by John DiMaggio
    • Finn the Human (Adventure Time), voiced by Jeremy Shada
    • Steven Universe, voiced by Daniel DiVenere
    • Garnet (Steven Universe), voiced by Estelle
    • Tom and Jerry, voiced by Eric Bauza
    • Reindog (an original character for MultiVersus), voiced by Andrew Frankel

Each character has a unique ability set that has been designed to pair dynamically with other characters. Customisation comes via perk loadouts, allowing for some gameplay variety. There are, naturally, also skins for each character to allow for some visual expression, as well as emotes.

As a free-to-play game, MultiVersus will be supported by in-game purchases. Warner Bros. Games has not yet revealed what those purchases will be, but with a season-based format that will be "content-filled", it seems sensible to expect cosmetics at the very least. The trailer also shows what appears to be a battle pass system, seen in the menus on the character details page.

MultiVersus' will support cross play and cross progression across all of its supported platforms: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC via Steam. Dedicated server-based rollback netcode will support the online gameplay "for the life of the game" to help reduce lag and disconnects. Guilds and social features will allow you to challenge other groups and climb leaderboards.

Player First Games will be holding playtests, and you can sign up to participate in them at the MultiVersus website.

MultiVersus follows hot on the heels of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, another Super Smash Bros-style fighter collecting characters from across numerous universes and shows. Content for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now ended following the release of Sora from Kingdom Hearts, and so it's now a battle to claim victory for the title of best currently supported character fighter.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 2 Review

The second half of Masters of the Universe: Revelation arrives Tuesday, Nov. 23 on Netflix.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation wraps up its layered, rewarding, character-driven take on He-Man and his pals with a dazzling five-episode display of animation and heart, though the story slightly slips a notch during its endgame by getting a little lost in the sorcery sauce.

Fortunately, the actual "rules" and lore (which has been greatly expanded upon, if not flat-out created, for this series) aren't the overall focus of Revelation. The standouts here are the twists, bends, and tweaks to the (admittedly flat) original narrative of the original '80s series. It's the deeper exploration of these characters — including inner conflict, doubt, and fear, along with flashback dives into the past for further sympathy-building context — that steal the show. All the explanations about Eternia, the universal power, the Sorceress' role, the Power Sword's actual use, and more are (fortunately) just cake decorations that ultimately don't matter as much as the people.

This doesn't mean, however, that it's not a touch frustrating when the magical lines all begin to blur and the scope of characters' power seems to change every few minutes. Most of this happens during the finale's final battle, but it's also present a bit beforehand when the show struggles to differentiate Skeletor's evil machinations from Evil-Lyn's. A lot of the motivations pertaining to the diabolical use of sorcery feel like placeholders, but nothing better ever comes along. Still, even though everything becomes a swirl of "make-em-ups" toward the finish, the personal character moments shine brightest.

When we last left off, a self-exiled Teela and a ragtag crew of newbies, heroes, and villains succeeded in bringing Prince Adam back from Preternia, only to discover that Skeletor's soul had been hiding in Evil-Lyn's scepter the entire time, ready to flip the table when the time was right. Now we've got "Skelegod," a new enhanced form of Skeletor (same old petty vibes) and our champions must contend with a powered-up Super Shredder version of their old foe.

The insta-threat of Skelegod has all the makings for an interesting back half of Revelation, but the show's smart enough not to rest on just that. Without spoiling too much, Skelegod doesn't last very long and fairly quickly, a new (and way more interesting) danger arises to wreck everything, enabling — yes — the crazy team up you probably never thought you'd see.

For those who didn't enjoy He-Man taking an extreme back seat during the first five episodes, Prince Adam's mighty alter ego returns for these chapters, though not without a few fun changes to the formula (including the primal results of what happens when Adam tries to summon power without his sword!). But while Adam/He-Man returns as more of a participating element, it's Sarah Michelle Gellar's Teela and Lena Headey's Evil-Lyn who get the best treatment here.

The show exists to make us care about characters we never did previously.

Both of them are given rich backstories, secrets, and destinies while being set on a collision course of sorts. And it's all made more meaningful because of who Evil-Lyn was during the first half of the series when she teamed with the good guys to save the universe. Revelation's game plan was always to expand and deepen, creating a fuller world by fleshing out supporting characters who were usually relegated to sidekick/henchman status. And this acts as chain of vindication. By benefit of Evil-Lyn's development, Beast Man is able to ascend as well. Likewise, Teela's various narrative enhancements allow for Duncan to have meaningful moments.

Revelation's ending leaves room for more, for sure, but one of the drawbacks to going so big with your climax, and playing so loose with your magic, is that it's hard to touch back down to Earth (or Eternia in this case). That being said, we're definitely set up with a "reboot" of sorts, with some new characters filling old roles and a better understanding by all involved of creating a system that works. The old model of Adam keeping He-Man a secret failed, and in doing so it caused ripples of resentment that broke bonds and busted marriages. It's almost as if all the fire and fury of Revelation was just to get everyone to a better place emotionally — even the villains.

Swamp Thing: Green Hell Gives a DC Hero a Post-Apocalyptic Transformation

DC's mature readers-focused Black Label imprint has been going strong for several years at this point, but only now is Swamp Thing getting his own Black Label comic. But luckily, Swamp Thing: Green Hell certainly looks to be worth the wait, especially with such an impressive creative team at the helm.

IGN can exclusively debut a new, unlettered preview of Green Hell #1, featuring stunning artwork by artist Doug Mahnke (Superman, JLA). Check out these pages in the slideshow gallery below:

Drawn by Mahnke and written by Jeff Lemire (who previously tackled Swamp Thing during his New 52 Animal Man series), Green Hell is a limited series that takes full advantage of the fact that it's not set in traditional DC continuity. The series instead gives the titular hero a post-apocalyptic makeover, exploring a flooded world where Swamp Thing in humanity's last defense against the supernatural forces that want to restart life from square one. Here's DC's official description for the series:

The Earth is all but done. The last remnants of humanity cling to a mountaintop island lost in endless floodwater. The Parliaments of the Green, the Red, and the Rot all agree: it’s time to wipe the slate clean and start the cycle of life over again. And to do so, they’ve united their powers to summon an avatar—one of the most horrific monsters to ever stalk the surface of this forsaken planet. Against a creature like that, there can be no fighting back…unless you have a soldier who understands the enemy. Someone who has used its tactics before. Someone like Alec Holland.

Swamp Thing: Green Hell is a three-issue limited series. Like most Black Label comics, each issue is published as a 48-page, prestige format book. Look for the first issue to hit stores on December 28, 2021.

In other recent comic book news, Loki's Miss Minutes is making the jump to Marvel's comic book universe, and Marvel just revealed the latest character to inherit the Venom symbiote.
