• Jared Leto Endorses the Suicide Squad Ayer Cut: ‘That’s What Streaming’s For, Right?’

Suicide Squad’s very own Joker wants to see the Ayer Cut, as Jared Leto supports the release of the director’s cut of the film. During an interview with Variety, Jared Leto said he thinks it’s time Warner Bros. released the Ayer Cut – an unreleased version of the Suicide Squad by director David Ayer.

“Absolutely! Why not?” he said. “Why wouldn’t they? Why wouldn’t they? I mean, that’s what streaming’s for, right?”

Despite not wanting to speak publicly about the Ayer Cut anymore, director David Ayer agreed with Leto’s comments.

“Exactly what streaming is for,” he said via Twitter. “If you own IP and you have a mandate to monetize it from your shareholders that’s exactly what you do.”

Ayer first began discussing his cut of Suicide Squad around the same time that DC fans began campaigning for the Snyder Cut – Zack Snyder’s extended version of Justice League. But despite Warner Bros. releasing Snyder’s cut as an HBO exclusive, they revealed they have no such plans for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.

“We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut,” said Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff.

Ayer previously expressed frustration at the way his original movie was reshaped, stating that it was supposed to be a “heartfelt drama”.

"I get it, it's a business,” he said. “It's frustrating because I made a really heartfelt drama and it got ripped to pieces and they tried to turn it into Deadpool, which it just wasn't supposed to be. And then you take the hit, you're the captain of the ship, my name was on it.”

“Even though it didn't represent what I actually made, I would take all the bullets and be a good soldier,” he added. “I made an amazing movie. It's an amazing movie, it just scared the shit out of the executives.”

Whether or not the Ayer Cut will ever see the light of day remains to be seen. But with Jared Leto backing its release, it’s certainly gaining some high-profile support.

    Tiger King 2 Review

All five episodes of Tiger King Season 2 are available now on Netflix.

Watching the five new episodes that comprise Tiger King 2, one is reminded that, sometimes, you can never go back. In March 2020, when humanity was freshly stuck inside due to the global pandemic lockdowns, the arrival of Netflix’s Tiger King docuseries was the trashy distraction we all needed. But now in November 2021, with the pandemic still killing way too many people and humanity beyond weary of being caged inside our homes, Tiger King 2, as they say, hits different.

As a refresher, Tiger King was the sordid, tabloidy expose of Joe Exotic, the owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma. With his bleached mullet, terrible self-produced music videos, and rickety zoo housing a variety of abandoned animals, including big cats, Exotic came across like a modern day, white trash P.T. Barnum. But in the course of the doc narrative, the carnival sideshow aspect got dark with his bizarre obsession and hate for rival conservationist Carole Baskin.

Tiger King 2 picks up where the insanity left off, with Exotic in prison for a 22-year sentence for hiring a hitman to kill Baskin and violations of the Lacey Act and the Endangered Species Act. Exotic signed his animals and zoo over to another frenemy in private zookeeping, Jeff Lowe, and so he’s a bigger player now too. This docuseries also tracks where the other major players from the original series are, using a mix of brand-new footage and a lot of news clips, since various participants, including Carole and Howard Baskin, didn’t come back for new interviews.

The new episodes hit specific themes, like the opener focusing mostly on Exotic and his quest for a pardon from Donald Trump before he left office. “The Carole Diaries” and “Bounty Hunting” function as a two-part quasi-Dateline episode trying to get to the bottom of Carole’s missing ex husband, Don Lewis. And the last two episodes, “The Lyin’ King” and “Stark Raving Mad,” are about the miscreants and shady thugs who are still operating private zoos for profit in Exotic’s circle, including Lowe and Tim Stark.

Directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin are clearly picking at the bones of their footage for this follow-up. There’s plenty of re-treading of the more salacious stories, including the bounty on Carole’s head and Don’s disappearance, with many rumors that Carole killed him. The doc doesn’t confirm anything, it just sniffs a little deeper in some areas, making the already sordid tales more complicated or just gross. The fact that Don Lewis spent a lot of time in Costa Rica with underaged women was not something I wanted or needed to know, but this series gave me that and now it’s there forever in my brain. In fact, the sheer volume of distasteful stories unearthed about the gaggle of awful people in this niche world of exotic animals should earn us all a big bottle of eye bleach. The only mammals that come out of this series with any impunity are the animals stuck inside the misery wrought on them by these bottom-feeder humans.

And that’s a big problem with Tiger King 2; the animals stuck in deplorable living conditions are the true victims, yet they are barely focused on until the final episode. Carole and a PETA lawyer are the only talking heads who genuinely lament what is happening to them in the abysmal baton passing of animals from one bad actor to the next, and it makes this a distasteful watch overall. In the fourth episode, from one of Joe’s many inside-prison phone interviews, he even admits that the financial machinations going on between Lowe and Stark and their cronies are “not about the tigers,” which might as well be the subtitle for this season. It’s galling that it took a few years in prison for Exotic to get the irony of how his own callous and thoughtless treatment of his animals is the karma bestowed upon him as he now sits in a small cage.

Tiger King 2 retreads a lot of the same trashy territory.

If there’s anything of interest to be gleaned from the five new hours of material, it’s the revelations surrounding Allen Glover, who was supposedly the hired hitman paid by Joe to kill Carole Baskin. His on-camera confessions implicating other players in the plot might feel worthy enough to tread through this series as the last two episodes lay out the lurid and interwoven destinies of these rich, narcissistic men who are more interested in ego than ecology. They scream and threaten police as warrants are served, and knife one another in the back as easily as breathing in order to cover their own asses as the Federal and local authorities dig deeper into their crimes and cover-ups. So, even if Glover ends up revealing evidence here that could get Exotic a new trial and out of jail, there’s still a host of crimes he did commit against his animals and others. The moral of this new story is that maybe every single one of them all need to be in jail, and then maybe nature can finally heal.

The Success of Hawkeye Hinges on Kate Bishop and Clint Barton’s Friendship

The below Hawkeye feature is spoiler-free for the upcoming Disney+ series.

In issue #6 of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s acclaimed Hawkeye run, Clint Barton is preparing to jump ship. He’s gotten into trouble with his neighborhood thugs (the Tracksuit Mafia) resulting in the innocent tenants of his own building to be threatened, and he’s convinced the world would be better off without him. Enter Kate Bishop, who doesn’t waste time calling Clint out on his BS. She refuses to take his things and bluntly tells him that he’s wrong for leaving — not just that he’s wrong, but that he’s a coward who runs away from his problems. She puts him in his place, stands up to him, and gives him support while he’s wallowing in his worst headspace.

The moment between the two characters is one that, on the surface, seems like a dramatic interaction needed to spur the remaining events of the issue into action. But Clint and Kate’s relationship — its complexity, its foundation, and how it’s portrayed — represents so much more than a narrative turning point. It represents a friendship that’s real, relatable, and genuine.

And it’s what viewers will find themselves drawn to when they tune into Disney+’s Hawkeye series.

Hawkeye is already a unique Phase 4 show in many ways. It’s the MCU’s first “street-level” show since Netflix’s series, The Defenders, bringing the action and drama to a place that resonates more with the average audience member than mystical timelines and supernatural powers do. It’s also an MCU property set during Christmas. And with the show’s depiction of Clint and Kate, it’s proving to be unique in another way — the way it depicts a superhero relationship.

Over the course of six episodes, fans will follow the grumpy Avenger dad and spunky do-gooder archer as they navigate threats, unexpected surprises, and setbacks. Their relationship is a focal point, just as it was in the comic that the show is drawing most of its inspiration from. When Fraction and Aja’s Hawkeye debuted in 2012, it brought new life to these characters by introducing a fresh take on Clint and Kate. Part of this fresh take (and a reason that the story became so beloved among fans) included depicting a genuine, sometimes imperfect relationship between two superheroes who had the honor of sharing the same unique name and skill set.

The two characters represented something that everyone could relate to — that is, a mutual respect grounded in a friendship where people are comfortable enough to understand the most important parts of each other. It’s the kind of bond we don’t see in the superhero world often, if at all; these characters usually aren’t known for their relationships unless it’s part of a team or they’re romantically involved (or mortal enemies.)

But Clint and Kate are none of those things. What they are is partners. They’re friends, confidants, mentors, and equals who aren’t afraid to call each other out on their faults or mistakes. They may not always agree, but they support each other unconditionally. They believe in one another even when things get hard — especially when things get hard. And although they routinely tangle in each other’s lives and always prove they’re “better together,” they also exist as their own individual personalities. Clint is allowed to feel down about himself and have bad days, while Kate is allowed to make mistakes due to her recklessness.

In the same way that the MCU has changed over the years, so has its audience. Gone are the days the world only wanted to see recognizable superheroes like Iron Man or Thor or Captain America. Gone are also the days when MCU content would tell by-the-book stories, void of any experimentation or originality. Over the span of a decade, fans new and old have brought with them a specific passion for the heroes they see on screen: a passion to see people like themselves, whether that’s through race, gender, or friendships. And while the word “buddy comedy” tends to be thrown around when it comes to quirky and quippy team-ups in the MCU, Hawkeye might be the first to properly acknowledge the term in the way it was meant to be acknowledged: two opposing on-screen dynamics who, despite their personality differences, have a healthy love and respect for each other.

Kate may be young. She may be reckless. But she’s caring and strong and opinionated, and she’s got a lot to teach Clint — who’s also got a lot he can learn from her. As the comic proves, you learn how to be a better person from the people around you — the ones who give you chances to find yourself. And as we see through the friendship of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop, if you have someone like that in your life, you can truly embrace the best parts of being a superhero.

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Characters Could Return in New Projects

Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced a new generation of heroes with Rey, Finn and Poe, and it looks as though it’s not the last we’ve seen of them.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy hinted that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may not be the end of the line for characters from the sequel trilogy.

“Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” she said about the heroes of the most recent Star Wars sequels. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.”

Although The Rise of Skywalker effectively capped off the Star Wars sequel trilogy, it left a lot of threads still hanging. What will Rey do next? Will Poe Dameron become the leader of Rogue Squadron? Is Finn going to become a Jedi?

All these questions offer big opportunities to tell more Star Wars stories. But don’t necessarily expect more movies – it could be that we see them appear elsewhere. The Mandalorian famously reintroduced the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter while setting up Boba Fett for his very own series – The Book of Boba Fett. But with a third season of The Mandalorian in the works, there are plenty of opportunities to introduce other characters.

Of course, Rey, Finn and Poe might be a bit young… but Lucasfilm is obviously keen to weave together the varying stories from the galaxy far, far away. That could mean they show up in other parts of the Star Wars universe.

Other Star Wars heroes already slated to return include Obi-Wan Kenobi and his ill-fated apprentice Darth Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

Kennedy revealed it was an “emotional” time as both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen returned to their iconic roles.

“The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited,” said Kennedy. “They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realising how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers.”
