• Battlefield 2042 to Release First Major Fix Later This Week

After a particularly difficult and divisive launch, EA and DICE are releasing a second update for Battlefield 2042 on November 25, followed by a "substantial" third update in early December, and a fourth update sometime before the holidays. The second and third updates aim to address various technical issues and gameplay balancing.

Here's what to expect in Update #2:

    • Improved soldier revives, fixing an issue with not being able to revive a teammate when they die close to a wall or object.
    • A "respawn protection system" that will address a bug that leaves players in a downed state for too long.
    • Re-enabling Battlefield Portal's UAV-1 interaction after adjusting its overpowered state.
    • Vehicle balancing for the LCAA Hovercraft and MD540 Nightbird.
    • Dispersion reduced across all weapon types excluding shotguns, resulting in more consistent bullet spread.
    • Additional "critical" changes to be detailed later.

Update #3 seems significantly larger in scope, and appears to address a common complaint that the transition from the end of a match to being booted back to the matchmaking menu was inconvenient. It also addresses common issues for player progression, rendering, and numerous balancing issues. The list is far too long to lay out here, but highlights include:

    • Improvements to the user interface, including weapon attachment management, collection screens, player card screen, end of round summary screen, and adding "new" markers so you can more easily find items.
    • "Improved the experience between EOR and the Main Menu"
    • Improved the reliability of matchmaking and reduced failed matchmaking
    • Introduction of weekly missions that reward cosmetic unlocks
    • Fixed multiple issues with water graphics and rendering, plus stuttering and visual flickering issues.
    • "Over 150" small changes across all maps
    • A more descriptive interaction system that replaces a generic "interact" prompt with something more specific, like "call elevator."
    • Reduced spread for weapons when ADS and moving, applied globally.
    • Improved accuracy for stationary weapon ADS. Bullet spread is also reduced when you use single fire or burst fire instead of automatic.
    • Added a new UI element that highlights teammates who can revive you when they're within 50 meters. Players who ping to signal they intend to revive you are also listed in a new UI element.
    • Improved bot behavior for reviving, helicopter piloting, and combat/game mode behaviors.
    • Audio mix improvements, including changes to enemies firing at a player.

Update #3 also includes balancing and technical changes for several specialists, gadgets, and melee combat. You can read the full patch notes here.

EA and DICE say they're also tracking issues related to servers and hardware. Chief among these are rare instances of servers not registering hit markers and rare instances of spawning without your intended loadout. On the hardware side, EA and DICE released a mandatory update for Xbox Series X/S players that addressed systems performing a power cycle during gameplay.

If it seems like an incredibly long list of fixes, that's because it is. The updates will hopefully address some of the most common technical and balancing complaints that have plagued Battlefield 2042 since launch, resulting in it becoming one of Steam's worst-reviewed games despite also being one of its most-played.

You can check out IGN's review of Battlefield 2042 for resident FPS wunderkind Stella Chung's opinion on what the new entry brings to the table and what's sorely missing.

These Epic Black Friday Deals Are Available Right Now (Updated)

There are plenty of Black Friday deals that have already gone live ahead of November 26, but the ones on this page are the cream of the crop, and you don't want to miss out on them. Get a free $50 Amazon gift card when you pick up an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. Score the lowest price ever on an updated pair of Apple AirPods Pro noise cancelling earbuds. Save $400 off the spacious Samsung Odssey G9 49" gaming monitor. Pick up the (in)famous Nintendo Switch Mario Kart 8 bundle or a next-gen Xbox Series S console. Subscribe to 1 year of PS Plus for only $39.99. These deals and more below.

Black Friday Deal: Oculus Quest 2 VR Headset with Bonus $50 Amazon Gift Card for $299

The Oculus Quest 2 has so far been the best value when it comes to VR gaming. It's hundreds of dollars cheaper than its competitors, it has phenomenal tracking, it doesn't need to be tethered to a PC, and it boasts a huge library of games (even Half Life: Alyx is easily playable on the Quest 2). In my opinion, and with price factored in, it's far and away the best VR headset to get into Beat Saber. Recently, Oculus has re-released its Oculus Quest 2 VR headset with double the storage (128GB vs 64GB) for the exact same price. Now, for Black Friday, Amazon is throwing in a $50 gift card with your purchase.

Black Friday Deal: New Apple AirPods Pro with MagSafe Charger for $159

Save $90 off the recently updated Apple AirPods Pro earbuds with this Black Friday deal from Amazon. The "V2.1" model is mostly unchanged, but it does come with a new MagSafe wireless charging case. This just means that the new charging case easily connects to Apple's MagSafe wireless charger. No, that's not a big update, but at this price, it's actually way, way cheaper than getting the older generation AirPods Pro.

Black Friday Deal: Samsung Odyssey G9 49" Gaming Monitor for $999.99

The Samsung Odyssey G9 is one of the largest, most immersive gaming monitors on the market. It was a huge hit last Black Friday, and with today's Black Friday deal it's even less expensive than ever. The Odyssey G9 boasts a massive 49" 5120×1440 curved display with a fast 1ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, and G-SYNC compatibility. It also boasts a high contrast ratio, good color rendition, and wide viewing angles thanks to its QLED VA panel.

Black Friday Deal: Alienware Aurora R12 RTX 3060 Ti Gaming PC for $1399.99

Not only is this the best Alienware Black Friday deal right now, it's probably the least expensive prebuilt gaming PC equipped with an RTX 3060 Ti video card anywhere. With the RTX 3060 Ti video card selling for over $800 on eBay, getting a fully built Alienware system with an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of SDD storage for $1399 seems like an absolute steal. The RTX 3060 Ti is much more powerful than the standard RTX 3060; in fact, it's as powerful as the RTX 2080 SUPER.

1 Year of PS Plus for $39.99

Everyone who owns a PS4 or PS5 console should take advantage of this Black Friday deal. You'll need to subscribe to a PS Plus membership just to play online, but fortunately the membership offers way more than that. You get free games every month, exclusive discounts at the PlayStation Store, and access to the very impressive PS Plus Collection for PS5 owners. The PS Plus Collection includes highly-rated AAA games like God of War, Persona 5, The Last of Us Remastered, Days Gone, Final Fantasy XV, Mortal Kombat, Ratchet & Clank, and more, with most of them optimized for 60fps gameplay on the PS5 console.

Black Friday Deal: Nintendo Switch Console with Mario Kart and 3 Months of Switch Online for $299

Black Friday isn't complete without a proper Black Friday Nintendo Switch deal. This bundle shouldn't come as a surprise; it's the same bundle we've seen last year. That said, any Nintendo Switch deal is better than none at all, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is an outstanding game that belongs in everyone's library. The 3 months of Nintendo Switch Online membership allows you to play online, which is a major contribution to MK8's replayability. This Black Friday deal keeps going in and out of stock at various retailers.

Black Friday Deal: Microsoft Xbox Series S Fortnite and Rocket League Console Bundle for $299.99

We didn't expect to see any discounts on the new Xbox Series X|S consoles, so any freebies included, even digital ones, are always welcome. This bundle adds some digital goodies for Fortnite (Midnight Drive Pack and 1,000 V-Bucks) and Rocket League (1,000 Rocket League credits). If you're not interested in these two games, well, at least you just found a console at a reputable vendor. The Xbox Series S may not be as hard to find as the Series X, but it isn't available anywhere else online right now.

Black Friday Deal: Xbox Series X|S Wireless Controllers for $49 Each (Includes Daystrike Camo )

Save almost 40% off select Xbox Series X|S wireless controllers for Black Friday. This new controller features a redesigned hybrid D-pad, textured grip on the triggers, bumpers, and back, and a battery life of up to 40 hours. It has a universal 3.5mm audio jack for headphones and a USB Type-C input for plug-and-play compatibility for the PC.

    Black Friday Deal: 2021 LG C1 4K OLED TV with HDMI 2.1 Inputs (4K @ 120Hz) Starting at $1096.99

The LG C1-series OLED TVs have already been discounted for Black Friday. The 48", 50" and 65" sizes have all been marked down to the lowest price we've ever seen. For those of you who have the PS5 or Xbox Series X console, this is the OLED TV you should be looking at. It sports multiple HDMI 2.1 inputs, which is necessary to push 4K @ 120Hz. Most other OLED TVs don't have any HDMI 2.1 inputs. The LG C1 OLED TV improves upon last year's highly-rated CX model with an upgraded A9 Gen 4 processor that delivers slightly better image quality, better 4K scaling, and improved audio handling.

Black Friday Deal: PS5 and Xbox Series X Games

A year has been since the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles have been released, and we're finally seeing next-gen video games drop in price to respectable levels during this Black Friday. Definitely the highlight of this stellar assortment of games is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. The game was released on October 26, less than a month ago, at a retail price of $59.99. Today, Walmart has both PS5 and Xbox Series X editions for only $25. It even includes a steelbook. The Black Friday deal is unmatched anywhere else.

Black Friday Deal: Nintendo Switch Compatible Micro SDXC Memory Cards (Various Sizes Available)

If there's one accessory you will definitely need for your Nintendo Switch, it's a memory card. The Nintendo Switch only has a measly 32GB of built-in storage. If you plan to purchase any digital games in the future (like any game in the Nintendo eShop), you'll quickly find out that 32GB is simply not enough storage. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for example, takes up 13GB for storage all by itself! Fortunately, Black Friday memory card deals abound and several of them are already available now.

Black Friday Deal: Ring Fit Adventure for Nintendo Switch for $54

Ring Fit Adventure is a fantastic way to exercise at home. Unlike other workout games, Ring Fit Adventure has an actual storyline complete with exploration, battles, bosses, and more. You'll be grinding, but with tangible real-world results. It's worth it at the retail cost of $79.99 and this Black Friday deal is a no-brainer. The Ring itself extremely sturdy; I've abused mines for almost 2 years and it still hasn't deformed in any way.

Black Friday Deal: Sony WH1000XM4 Active Noise Cancelling Wireless Headphones for $248

The ever popular and highly rated Sony WH1000XM4 headphones are back down to $248. This is the lowest price of the year by $30. The WH1000XM4 is oft considered one of the best noise cancelling headsets under $400; it's comparable to the Bose QuietComfort headphones in terms of audio quality and noise cancellation and superior in terms of build quality.

Amazon Nears Deal to Make Mass Effect TV Series

Amazon Studios is nearing a deal to develop a Mass Effect TV series based on BioWare’s popular sci-fi RPG.

In a report about Amazon’s success with the recent Wheel of Time adaptation, Deadline says Amazon is readying more adaptations for popular franchises, including Mass Effect. The report notes that the deal is nearing, meaning Amazon and EA haven’t fully agreed to the project just yet.

There are no details on the story or whether or not this will be an original story set in the Mass Effect universe or a story related to the video game series.

Mass Effect is a massively popular RPG series created by BioWare. The sprawling sci-fi epic consists of many different alien races and civilizations reckoning with technology left behind by the ancient precursor civilization. The series consists of the core Mass Effect trilogy and a sequel series Mass Effect: Andromeda.

If Amazon makes a Mass Effect TV series, it will be the second video game adaptation in the works at the studio. Amazon previously announced it’s making a Fallout TV show from the creators of Westworld Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Bethesda boss Todd Howard revealed in a recent AMA that work on the Fallout TV series is ongoing.

Elsewhere, HBO is adapting The Last of Us for TV while on the film side Sony is readying to release an Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake.

While there hasn’t been a new Mass Effect game in years, EA recently released the Mass Effect Legendary Edition which remasters and collects all three Mass Effect games in a single package. And BioWare has been slowly teasing the next Mass Effect game currently in development.

Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop: All the Anime Homages in the Live-Action Series

Warning: this article contains major spoilers for Netflix's Cowboy Bebop! If you haven't already, be sure to check out IGN's full Season 1 review.

Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop may not quite be a 1:1 remake of the anime, but it gets pretty close at times. Many episodes feature key character moments and fight scenes taken directly from the source material.

Just how close does the live-action series get? Let’s break down the scenes that owe a major debt to the anime.

    Episode 1 – “Cowboy Gospel”

Nowhere are the similarities between the two Bebops more obvious than in the first episode, which follows the anime episode “Asteroid Blues” pretty closely.

In both cases, our heroes are on the trail of doomed drug smugglers Asimov and Katerina, and we first meet those two characters in a New Tijuana bar called El Rey. Both versions show Asimov dosing himself with the Bloody Eye drug and attacking rival gangsters.

Asimov and Katerina meet a similarly tragic end in both versions when their ship is shot down by the ISSP. We even see a dead Katerina with vials of Bloody Eye spilling out into space.

The main difference is that Katerina shoots Asimov in the anime, while Faye fatally wounds him in the live-action series. Don’t forget, Faye hadn’t made her debut yet in the anime.

Finally, both versions have a scene where Spike and Jet are eating bell peppers and beef (minus the beef).

This episode also includes a fun nod to Cowboy Bebop: the Movie, adapting the scene where Spike nonchalantly interrupts a convenience store robbery. Though in this case it’s a casino robbery.

    Episode 2 – “Venus Pop”

The second chapter of the live-action series reaches deep into the anime, pulling in the off-kilter terrorist known as the Teddy Bomber from the episode “Cowboy Funk.”

Just like in the anime, there’s a scene where the Teddy Bomber becomes very angry when no one seems to be paying him any attention.

We also get our first glimpse of the Red Dragon Syndicate elders in this episode. But where the elders are three identical-looking old men in the anime, here they’re shown to be a more diverse group of mask-wearing gangsters. We even later learn one of them is Vicious’ father, a major diversion from the anime.

Episode 3 – “Dog Star Swing”

Episode 3 shares a lot in common with the anime episode “Stray Dog Strut,” as we see Spike and Jet face off with Abdul Hakim and encounter Ein the Corgi for the first time.

Both versions even show a similar martial arts fight between Spike and Abdul.

The live-action version differs by showing us more of Abdul’s background and motivations. And where the anime has Abdul resort to plastic surgery to change his face, the live-action series instead makes use of a hologram disguise.

    Episode 4 – “Callisto Soul”

Episode 4 introduces eco-terrorist Twinkle Maria Murdoch and her masked henchmen. These characters should definitely be familiar to anime fans, as both Maria and her goons are wearing very similar costumes as seen in the anime episode “Gateway Shuffle.”

The climax of this episode also features a familiar shot of Faye’s ship falling apart after destroying one of Murdoch’s missiles, similar to the scene where she and Spike are racing to the hyperspace gate in the anime.

    Episode 6 – Binary Two-Step

This episode offers a new spin on the anime episode “Brain Scratch,” which also deals with the bounty on cult leader Dr. Londes. In the anime, Londes turns out to be a hacker stuck in a digital coma. In the Netflix series, he’s revealed to be a rogue A.I.

This episode also serves as an early cameo for Radical Ed, who had already long since made her debut in the anime by this point.

    Episode 7 – “Galileo Hustle”

Episode 7 features one of the most heart-wrenching and important callbacks to the anime as we learn about Faye Valentine’s tragic past. This episode shows Faye watching a video message her younger self recorded, and that message is almost line-for-line identical to the one seen in the anime episode “Speak Like a Child.” Even the haunting piano refrain is the same.

    Episode 8 – “Sad Clown A-Go-Go”

Episode 8 is another one that owes a deep debt to the anime, in this case the episode “Pierrot Le Fou.” A number of moments in this episode serve as direct callbacks to the anime, including a shot that shows Pierrot’s shadow receding after Spike is injured in the explosion.

Spike runs into Pierrot again at an amusement park, though this time the park is named Earth Land rather than Space Land. Their fight begins very similarly, with Pierrot crying out “Let’s party!” It also ends in almost the exact same way, with Pierrot getting stabbed in the leg and crying out for his mother.

There are two differences worth noting here. In the anime Pierrot is deathly afraid of cats, while in the live-action series it’s dogs instead. We learn that this phobia ties back to his origin story, where he saw dogs like Ein being experimented upon.

The live-action Pierrot also has an actual reason to target Spike in the Netflix series, as he’s a killer hired by Vicious.

Finally, in the anime, Spike uses western throwing knives, while in the live action version, he brings Japanese kunai.

    Episode 10 – “Supernova Symphony”

Season 1 reaches a dramatic conclusion with a finale that borrows liberally from the anime episode “Ballad of Fallen Angels,” even if the conclusion of this episode leaves the characters in very different places.

As Spike and Vicious battle it out and reach a stalemate inside the church, they recreate one of the most iconic shots from the anime in the process.

Their fight also ends the same way, as an injured Spike falls out the stained glass window in slow motion. We even hear the same song – the beautifully sad “Green Bird.”

For more on how the live-action series ends on a very different note, be sure to check out IGN’s Canon Fodder episode:

Are there any key anime-inspired moments we missed from Season 1? Let us know in the comments.
