Soul Calibur 5 is the latest installment in the long running weapons based fighting game from Namco. Soul Calibur is based on some weird story about a good and a evil sword, really the story has never made much sense, in every game the evil sword gets destroyed yet every sequel the sword is back with the main bad guy, Nightmare. I have always admired the look and art of Japanese Anime, but the stories are always odd and never really translate to English very well.
In Soul Calibur 5 the story mode is very short, and most of it is broke into still images with bad voice over. Even the arcade modes do not have endings for each characters. So if you are a single player type gamer look elsewhere, or try Mortal Kombat, that game has a terrific single player mode. But out side of the single player shortcomings, the graphics are excellent again. Namco does a great job at animating their characters and the back grounds of the stages always have something cool to look at. One cool special addition to the game is Ezio Auditore from Assassins Creed.
The gameplay is smooth, and has been the same for all the Soul Calibur games. The only real new edition I could see was the ability to pull a super move once your meter fills, a lot like Street Fighter. For two player fighter fans this game has a long shelf life. But if your like me, and enjoy a good single player and unlocking arcade endings you might as well look elsewhere and just rent this one on the weekend.
